Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
People on the net are nasty (myself included)
I posted recently about a disallusionment I had with the current structure of major league baseball.
I was a little sweeping in my demand that all games should be at 8pm eastern time (and hour shift up for East coast teams, 2 hour shift back for west coast teams...maybe 8:30 would have been better...but still...rigid and early baseball times in the West would be unfair to the fans...I was wrong).
So, I've had two people reply...both seemingly intelligent people, articulate and well spoken.
However, both have been really offensive.
I'm willing to debate and ponder alternatives. There is no question that what I said was an opinion, so why should it incur such animosity.
The worst part is, when I feel I'm being attacked, insulted, downgraded, I step up to the same tactics. I act vicious and insulting right back at them...and that's not the person I want to be. I don't want to be insulting people I don't know, or trying to justify my opinion with abusive comments.
I'm guessing this is one of the reasons people have "friends only" journals.

So, this is a general apology to those people in the Baseball thread whom I have been insulting to, it was uncalled for, and just bad manners.

In addition, I basically cut the entry off from the public. I didn't feel like spending my day attending to this. If you would like to read it, I'll send you access to the whole post with comments.

I spend lots of time "sitting on my hands" because of how easy it is for me to become needlessly vituperative, so I commiserate. I marked your baseball renunciation with interest, because between you and [info]sharkins I'd been reminded that the Mariners were more than just something making it difficult for me to get to Elliot Bay Books. I actually found myself reading the sports pages yesterday - and was entertained by the fact that, like soap operas, you can ignore things for 20 years and then pick the threads right back up again. I'll file it under conservation of fen.

Good for you. Learning not to respond in kind is a valuable adaptation. A lot of what we do is "reactive" and it takes some practice to sidestep someone else's strong emotions, irrational arguments, insults or other attacks, and just respond to the content (or not at all).

It also shows bravery and self-awareness to say "I did this and I don't like that I did it" and I respect that.

Apparently good karma saved me from being the third snark. I had quite the reply written out that somehow got lost when I hit post, and I am one of your friends. Oops. Then again, hardly the first & certainly not the last time we'll clash on something :) Don't you dare give up on the game though or I'll have Kieran come smack you.

I don't have a problem with people disagreeing with me, I was concerned of my bias during the game, which is why I tried to find a good sample set to check against, to see if it was valid.

Oakland played a fine game, any way you shake it.
